NEWS : Sicilian Citrus: Forecast from our partner Simone Gatto

Updated : 27/11/2015

Mandarin and bergamot shortage announced

While the bitter orange harvest is proceeding as usual, the lemon harvest is late. The first quantities will be available by mid-December, the time when the prices are set and, we hope, remain stable.

As was, unfortunately, expected, the mandarin harvest this year is smaller than usual, particularly in Calabria. The shortage of fruit in that region – a principal source for the industry – has led to a strong increase in source material costs: on average 10 per cent in Sicily and 44 per cent in Calabria. The result is a 41 per cent global rise in fruit costs.
Because of this there is a 30 per cent drop, compared with last year, in the quantity of fruit processed.

A strong price hike also is expected for bergamot due to a 50 per cent shortfall.
The cost of fruit has been set at 20 per cent higher than last year.
Harvest has just begun and first processing show a drop in yield of essential oil.
