NEWS : Essential oil of Cardamom Guatemala: market report

Updated : 09/12/2014

High pressure on price for 2014-2015 production

Since the beginning of harvest in October, price is increased due to confirmed low volumes of this new production of cardamom.

These bad harvest conditions are due to several factors:
- thrips have attacked seeds and compromised the yield and qualities available. 30 % of seeds are damaged (up from 20% last year).
- because of the low prices for the two last harvests and following to the thrips attacks, growers give low maintenance to their fields or even switch crops. Corn season has just begun and is more worth it.
- bad weather conditions with lots of rain in November, lowering volumes due to very bad access.

We expect a 30 % price increase, with 10 to 20% more next year from January, with should remain up until next harvest, which we forecast with still higher prices.
A higher price spread between low and high qualities is also expected.
