NEWS : Italian citrus production : forecast from Simone Gatto

Updated : 27/10/2014

Harvest is underway in Sicily and Calabria. Production, stable or slightly reduced depending on the fruit, should cover demand.

Lemon
The winter’s lemon harvest looks to be normal this year : 550,000 tonnes of which 180,000 tonnes will go to industry. This corresponds to about 850 tonnes of cold-pressed essential oil.
It is still too early to estimate a price for the essential oil because that will be strongly influenced by Argentinian production.
But it is not unreasonable to assume that good lemon harvests expected in Italy, Spain, and Turkey, combined with a drop in consumption due to poor weather over the past summer, will translate into a reduction in prices beginning January 2015.
It is highly probable that the first quantities of Primofiore lemon will be available to industry by the end of October.

Mandarin
While Sicily’s harvest is down by about 30 per cent, Calabria’s should be good. The global harvest and the quantity of fruit available for industry will be sufficient to meet demand. Production started one month ago.

Bergamot
A 20 per cent drop in production compared to last year should provoke a slight price increase for the essential oil.

Orange
Blond Orange production appears to be normal, despite a drop of 10 per cent due to the abandonment of plantations following last year’s price drop. Blood Orange production will fall 30 to 40 per cent.
