NEWS : Haitian Vetiver

Updated : 29/09/2011

In difficult circumstances, a dependable affiliate

Vetiver oil production in Haiti has proceeded normally despite the country’s extreme distress.
The ravages of the earthquake of 12 January 2010 remain far from being redressed, and only a small amount of the aid promised by the international community has been transferred.
In addition, there was significant uncertainty at the beginning of the year regarding the presidential election, in which the winner, Michel Martelly, set himself apart from the competition after the first round.
Thanks to the Vetiver industry, which directly or indirectly provides revenue to half of the population of the South Haiti department, this community enjoys more favourable living conditions than the rest of the country.
The Vetiver distilleries and users anticipated the prodigious rains which come with the La Niña climatic regime. Thus, root harvesting, distillation, and replanting was focused during the dry period between December and April.
All-in-all, summer production was excellent and needs were properly covered at a stable price, despite a particularly difficult context.
